Protecting an Elderly Parent From a Predatory Solar Contract

It is a call we get often, and it is always heartbreaking. An adult child discovers that their elderly parent, frequently on a fixed income, has been signed up for a 20- to 25-year solar loan they cannot afford and never truly understood. If that describes your family, please know two things: you are not alone, and you may have more options than you think.

Why seniors are targeted

Commission-driven solar reps know that older homeowners are more likely to be home during the day, more likely to be trusting, and sometimes less comfortable pushing back on a high-pressure pitch. The result is a pattern of seniors locked into long-term, expensive obligations based on promises of “free” or dramatically reduced power bills that never come true.

Elder financial abuse protections

Most states have laws specifically designed to protect older adults from financial exploitation. When a sale involves:

  • Pressure or undue influence on a vulnerable person,
  • Misrepresentation of the costs or savings,
  • A contract the person clearly could not afford or understand, or
  • Failure to disclose key terms like escalating payments or a lien,

those protections may apply, often in addition to the standard consumer-protection grounds available to any homeowner.

What to do if you suspect this happened

  1. Gather the documents. Find the solar contract, the financing or lease agreement, and any sales materials. Note who the salesperson and finance company were.
  2. Write down what happened. How was the sale conducted? Was your parent pressured? What were they told the costs and savings would be?
  3. Do not let payments quietly continue without understanding the consequences, but also do not abruptly stop paying without advice.
  4. Get an honest assessment of whether the way the contract was sold gives grounds to cancel it.

You can step in

Many family members feel helpless, as if the signature on the page is the end of the discussion. It is not. The relevant question is whether the agreement was obtained fairly and honestly, and in elder cases, the answer is frequently no.

A free case review lets you lay out what happened and get a straight answer about your family’s options, with no cost and no obligation. If we do not think there are grounds, we will tell you. If there are, we can help you take the weight off your parent’s shoulders.
